Tour Diaries
22 / 11 / 2000 - an addendum to the addendum
Well. I didn't think that many people visited the site anymore, due to the band being defunct, but the diary about the Shifty Disco thing appears to have stirred up a hornets nest. Certainly I want to publicly apologise to those at Shifty Disco who were always enthusiastic, and worked hard to promote the album under difficult circumstances (those circumstances being a hotly hostile press and disinterested radio). I wasn't suggesting for a second that Shifty should be losing money on our behalf, in fact part of our reason for signing
to Shifty was sorrythankyou had an extremely good chance of selling much more than anything else they'd released, thereby
ensuring their future for some time to come, and hopefully that of a number of other Oxford bands. We wanted them to make
money. What we didn't want was to be treated as if them making money of our record, that we'd gone through hell to get from
our previous record company, was an annoyance when they could really be doing something cool, and we didn't want to feel like
we were being unreasonable in wanting the packaging to look as good as possible, within a reasonable budget, that letting us know through our manager what their plans were ahead of time was really not what they liked doing. Although my
language in the tour diary was perhaps too harsh, we did give Shifty an album that had cost over £150,000 to make, not forgetting
a year of emotional turmoil just for us to get it done. And yes, we did break up not long after the album came out, which I certainly
wanted less than Shifty, but they still have the album, and from what I hear it is still selling in some countries. Somebody making
money out of our music is fine. But being treated with contempt for our wishes, and then sending out a mail blaming us for things that weren't true got my back up somewhat.
